Last week we concluded our two-part series on Bedford Road with some more architecturally interesting homes that were constructed by noted architects during the 1930’s and 1940’s. 

This week we turn our attention to a Mid-Century Ranch, 452 Chalfonte. This eye-catching home was completed in 1952, having been created by a group of very talented artists - architect Omer C. Bouschor, builder James Monahan, landscape architect Eleanor Roache, and the renowned firm of Meathe & Kessler, who designed the original patio.

Last week we covered the residences created by architect Omer Cecil Bouschor in Grosse Pointe between 1934 and 1939. During his career this Detroit based architect created nearly 30 homes in the community, more than many other architects.

This week we conclude our presentation with the homes Bouschor designed between 1940 and 1954. Having mainly worked in Grosse Pointe Park during the 1930’s Bouschor, in the 1940’s, began to receive more commissions in the Farms and the Shores. From the list below you will the superb range of homes he created during this period.

Last week we explored the work of Earl G. Meyer. During his career he was a respected and prolific architect associated with the design of school buildings in southeastern Michigan during the 1950’s.

As with so many architects who began their careers during the 1930’s, these designers contributed a significant amount of work yet haven’t received the recognition they deserve, with very little written about them. Last week we presented some of the magnificent mansions that were built on Windmill Pointe during the 1920’s for wealthy Detroiter's and professionals who had begun to select the location to build grand homes in the suburbs.

Last week we covered the Tudor work of Omer C. Bouschor. During his career, this Detroit based architect created well over 29 homes in the community – more than many other architects.

The architectural style(s) that influenced Omer C. Bouschor’s homes in Grosse Pointe could be described as being defined by two very distinctive approaches. From the residences, we have presented there is a distinct shift from his Tudor Revival homes of the 1930’s, through to the modern colonial homes he created between 1935 and 1954.

As is the case with so many prolific architects who created homes in Grosse Pointe, it can be difficult to find information about them professionally and/or personally. This is no reflection on their skills as a designer, but attributed to the number of highly skilled architects who have worked in this area. We are spoilt for choice and it will no doubt take many more years to uncover the many projects that these lesser known, yet highly talented designers created.
