Historical Architecture of Grosse Pointe – 160 Provencal

Last week we concluded our series on the Robert O. Derrick designed homes on Provencal. He created six in total, more than any other architect.

This week we stay on Provencal as we visit a stunning Georgian Colonial style home – 160 Provencal was completed by HMA’s founder Hugo Higbie and his wife Marian Chapin in 1957.

160 Provencal was originally commissioned by Inez Chapin, it is not known who the architect was. Mrs. Chapin was the wife of Roy Chapin Sr. and the mother of Marian Chapin who was married to Hugo Higbie. The elder Chapin’s, Roy and Inez, built a stunning Georgian style home on Lake Shore in 1927 (457 Lake Shore, demolished in 1983) – you can read the full story by clicking here). Historical Architecture of Grosse Pointe – Dorothy Scherer

Last week focused on the life and career of Hugo Scherer, a prosperous businessman and real estate magnet. He worked closely with architect Louis Kamper on residential and commercial projects and was responsible for expanding the area nicknamed “The Cabbage Patch”, in the early 1900’s.

This week we turn our attention to Hugo’s youngest daughter Dorothy Clara Scherer – a prominent member of society who lived at 191 Lake Shore (later renumbered 201 Lake Shore) - a magnificent estate named “Higbie House”. Image courtesy of the Burton Historical Collection, circa 1926.

Historical Architecture of Grosse Pointe - 83 Kercheval

Last week we introduced you to the work of George J. Haas, a noted designer responsible for creating multiple iconic buildings in Metro Detroit and Grosse Pointe, including the Grosse Pointe Park Municipal Building and Grosse Pointe South High School.

This week we would like to share the story of our very own office - 83 Kercheval. The roots of Higbie Maxon Agney can be traced back to 1929, to the Maxon Brothers Real Estate firm, started by Paul and Richard Maxon. The Maxon Brothers office was originally located at 16914 Kercheval, in The Village. During the early 1940’s the brothers moved to their new office on the Hill, located at 83 Kercheval where Higbie Maxon Agney remains located today.

Historical Company of Grosse Pointe – Higbie Maxon Agney Celebrates its 90th Year

Last week we explored an iconic structure, the Windmill Point Lighthouse – a light that has stood at the entrance of Lake St. Clair for around 180 years. 

This week we would like to present another constant beacon in the community – Higbie Maxon Agney. This year Higbie Maxon Agney celebrates its 90th anniversary, an achievement Kay Agney and her team is extremely proud of.

The roots of the company can be traced back to 1929 to the Maxon Brothers Real Estate Firm. In 1972 Mr. Hugo S. Higbie acquired the Maxon Brothers Real Estate Firm and renamed the joined firms Higbie Maxon Realtors, Inc. That same year Higbie Maxon located to the Hill in Grosse Pointe Farms.
