Grosse Pointe History

For over 90 years Higbie Maxon Agney has been committed to protecting, promoting, and telling the story of Grosse Pointe and its historic homes – from the architects who designed them, the prominent families who lived in them, to the architectural styles that have shaped the community.

HMA’s Broker/Owner, Kay Angey, is an architectural enthusiast, and enjoys reading about the history of Grosse Pointe and old Detroit. Since her first drive down Lake Shore in the late 1970’s, she has been fascinated by the beauty and history of the community.

Originally settled by French farmers the beauty of the area gave way to wealthy Detroit industrialists establishing summer homes along the lake and eventually building grand estates overlooking Lake St. Clair. As the population grew, more modest homes and neighborhoods sprang up, and today Grosse Pointe is a vibrant community steeped in tradition and history.

As a company dedicated to preserving the history of Grosse Pointe Higbie Maxon Agent has -

  • an extensive archive with historic information on nearly every home in Grosse pointe
  • a weekly historical blog – now with over 500 posts
  • weekly ‘then and now’ images of Grosse Pointe homes - posted on social media
  • a free lecture series in conjunction with the GP Public Library. The lectures, held quarterly, are delivered by a guest speaker who has extensive knowledge of their subject field. The lecture series is free and open to everyone.

Grosse Pointe is a wonderful community steeped in history. It is incredibly important to us that we not only preserve what we have, but can share its story with everyone – near and far.
